Podcasting

" Where no counsel is, the people fall:
but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." Proverbs 11:14

What is podcasting?
Everywhere you turn online these days you hear the word "podcast" or "podcasting." A podcast is audio or visual content that is automatically delivered over a network via subscription. Once subscribed to, podcasts can be regularly distributed over the Internet or network and accessed with an iPod, laptop, or desktop computer (both PCs and Macs). You can then hear the podcast whenever you want from your computer or a portable media player.

Why is called Podcasting?
The name comes from iPod and broadcasting, which has managed to cause confusion because an iPod is not needed to listen to podcasts.

Uses of podcasting - Podcasts can be used for a number of different things,
1. Talk Shows
2. Music Shows
3. Interviews
4. Story Telling
5.Tutorials
6. Directions
7. Commentaries
8. Sportscasts and as the industry evolves broadcasters and webmasters may find additional ways to use podcasts in the future.

What do you need to hear a podcast?
The first thing you need is podcast subscription software. Your options include the latest version of Apple's iTunes (which has the software built in), or other services such as Odeo or iPodder, to manage your podcast subscriptions. At this point, you will already be able to listen to podcast audio from your computer (provided your computer has a sound card and can play MP3 audio files). If you want to make your podcasts portable, you will need to transfer them from your computer to a portable media device.

How to subscribe a podcast?
To subscribe to a podcast listed in the search directory, click on its name to view a brief description and subscription instructions. You may subscribe to many podcasts by clicking the buttons for popular tools like iTunes, Add to google, My Yahoo and newsgator, . . . etc.

In Ethiopodcast case if you don't see a button for your preferred tool, simply highlight the URL icon. Right-click the link (or Control-click in MacOS) and select "Copy" or "Copy Shortcut." You may then paste the link into your podcasting software. In iTunes you can find this option under the "Advanced" menu as "Subscribe to podcast."

What do you do if you subscribe to a podcast and do not hear anything!
First, be sure that you have audio player software; then, verify that the correct audio file was downloaded to your computer. You may need to modify the update settings in your podcasting software to ensure that this process occurs automatically. Next, check the update times in the description and make sure that a new edition should have been posted.

How much does it cost to use Podcast?
Ethiopodcast is free for you to use, but expensive to produce and serve.

How to unsubscribe to a podcast?
If you wish to unsubscribe to a podcast, please be sure to delete the entire feed entry (not just the individual audio editions) in your subscription management software. If you no longer regularly listen to a particular podcast, clearing that feed helps us contain costs associated with our podcasting service.
